Air Quality: Liberty County Judge Phil Fitzgerald said he had been notified by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality of the poor air quality here and in Harris County. Judge Fitzgerald is asking citizens to stop burning storm debris until further notice. Smoke from such fires can cause eye, nose and throat irritation and can be harmful to those with lung problems. The County Judge asks that all debris be placed near curbs for the state and county to remove and dispose of properly.

Escaped Murderer Captured: After being on the lam for 20 days, including the days surrounding Hurricane Ike’s landfall, escaped Liberty County murderer Marlow Wayne Reynolds was recaptured Sunday in the woods near the San Bernard River in Brazoria County. Texas Department of Corrections Spokesman Jason Clark said the recapture came after a tip from someone who saw the fugitive run into a wooded area. Prison officials say tracking dogs were used to find him.

LISD Resource Officer: A school resource officer is now at work on Liberty ISD Campuses.  Officer Barbie Skarpa has been hired for the joint peace officers position funded by both the district and Liberty Police Department.  She had just started working at Liberty ISD when Hurricane Ike struck the upper Texas coast.  Following the storm, she was working patrol for Liberty PD. Now, she has returned to Liberty ISD’s campuses in her new position as school resource officer.

Dayton Homecoming: Hurricane Ike has caused Dayton’s Homecoming Festivities to be rescheduled for October 10th. That’s when the Broncos host the Crosby Cougars. The 2008 Homecoming Queen Finalists are Misty Vidrine, Katie Baumgarner and Lekeshia Zeno. The King Finalists are K. J. Barton, Dylan Bethea and Zach Crowder. Suspect Resists: A 34-year-old man thought to be from Houston was arrested Saturday afternoon in Liberty following a lengthy confrontation with law enforcement officers from four different agencies. William White was charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest after finally being subdued with the aid of a tazer gun and a large contingent of officers. The incident all took place near the Kentucky Fried Chicken on U.S. 90.

Escaped Murderer: Escaped Liberty County murderer Marlow Wayne Reynolds was featured on the Fox television show “America’s Most Wanted” Saturday. The Houston Chronicle reports the fugitive was seen in Brazoria County on Saturday, but managed to elude officials. Reynolds is 6-foot tall and 186 pounds. He has hazel eyes, sandy hair and a ruddy complexion. He has a scar on his forehead and another scar on his right thigh. Marlow Reynolds should be considered armed and dangerous. He escaped from prison near Rosharon Sept. 9.

Theft Victims Sought: Liberty County Sheriff’s Department arrested Richard Weaver, 27, of Dayton and Kenneth May, 35, of Virginia in mid-September for burglary of a habitation. Since that time, the investigation indicates similar thefts may have been going on for the past couple of months. Lawmen say items recovered include yard equipment, electric saws, pressure washers, and much more. If your missing property may be part of the recovered items or you have any information on Richard Weaver or Kenneth May, call Sgt. Michelle Watson with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Department at 936-336-4500.

Hull-Daisetta ISD: Power has been restored to Hull-Daisetta Independent School Distract facilities. Teachers are back on campus today, and Hull-Daisetta students go back tomorrow.

High School Football: The Dayton Broncos and Barbers Hill Eagles were idle over the weekend, but both football teams play tomorrow night. The Broncos travel to Baytown Memorial, and the Eagles play at C.E. King. Kickoff for both games is 7 p.m. tomorrow. The Broncos game can be heard on KSHN and kshn.com. Over the weekend, Liberty fell to Splendora 35 to 32. Hardin beat Hemphill 48-27, and Hull-Daisetta downed Warren 32-6. Cleveland shut out New Caney 30-0.

Power Restoration: An update with the major power companies in Liberty Co. show’s the progress is nothing short of incredible. Keith Stapleton with Sam Houston Electric say’s they have restored all their Liberty County customers, a sentiment echoed by Dan Syphrett of Entergy. Randy Wiggins with the city of Liberty said their service is up and running as well.  Isolated outages should be reported.  City of Liberty customers call 336 3684. Entergy customers call 1 800 E-N-T-E-R-G-Y and those with Sam Houston Electric call 1 800 458 0381.

Electric Worker Injured: A lineman working with CPS Energy out of San Antonio was seriously injured yesterday just before noon.  City of Liberty Fire Chief Fred Collins said the worker suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to his face neck and upper arms as well as lacerations.  The unidentified worker was flown to Memorial Hermann in Houston said to be in serious condition. The San Antonio company is working in Liberty to restore power following Hurricane Ike.

Escapee Seen: Convicted in Liberty Co. of the 2003 murder of Leslie Ledford of Tarkington, Marlow Wayne Reynolds escaped from the prison where he was being held near Rosharon September 9th.  Information indicates the fugitive has been seen on surveillance footage from an Exxon Station in West Columbia, about 25 miles form the Stringfellow Unit where he made his prison break.

Storm Death: Chambers County Sheriff Joe Larive said the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a debris field east of FM 562 Tuesday afternoon. The victim apparently drowned. She is described as a white female in her late 40s or early 50s, 5’, 6” short brown hair with blond or gray highlights and a medium build. This marks the second storm-related death in Chambers County. The first was 52-year-old Anahuac resident Gary Schweinle, electrocuted on Sept. 12th attempting to secure his roof before Hurricane Ike made landfall. Sheriff LaRive said the search for other victims will continue until all of the marked debris fields have been searched with dogs.

Mosquito Spraying: Texas Director of Homeland Security Steve McCraw said the state would begin aerial spraying for mosquitoes at 10 p.m. tonight and continue from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. each night until the entire area affected by Hurricane Ike is covered. Residents may want to close doors and windows and bring pets indoors during those hours.

FEMA Update: Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Branch said so far there are no dates set for FEMA to set up a location here for folks to apply for assistance. He said the best way to apply is by phone at 1-800-621-3362 or on line at www.fema.gov. Officials say the best time to apply by phone is late at night or early morning. FEMA officials are planning to open relief centers here as soon as enough personnel are in place to do so.

Kidnapping & Murder: Police seek a suspect in the murder of one woman and the abduction of another woman and four children. Information indicates Ramiro Contreras entered a Cleveland home early Tuesday morning brandishing a gun. He allegedly shot and killed a woman identified as Barbara Swearingen, 63- a resident of the house- and wounded two others. He then allegedly abducted his wife and four young children who had been staying there. An Amber Alert was issued until just after 3 p.m. yesterday when the missing mother and children were found safe. Ramiro Contreras remains at large, considered armed and dangerous. Call 9-1-1 or Cleveland Police at 281-592-2621 with any information on his whereabouts.

Commissioners: Yesterday, Liberty County commissioners voted to lift the burn ban for un-incorporated areas of the county.  They did ask folks to be courteous to neighbors that do not have electricity and must leave windows open. Remember it is always illegal to burn inside the incorporated cities of Cleveland, Dayton and Liberty. Commissioners also approved issuing $5 million in certificates of obligation to remodel the old Wal-Mart building. The county purchased the building to house some county offices. The money should be available by late October.

Hardin Football: This week’s Hardin Hornets football game has been moved. Originally set for Saturday afternoon, the Hardin game was moved to Friday night. Hardin hosts Hemphill with kick off at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Schools: Liberty ISD Superintendent Mona Chadwick said students in Liberty might return to class tomorrow. Following an inspection of all campuses on Monday, she confirmed the district’s students would indeed return to class Thursday. The East Chambers ISD will also reopen on Thursday. West Hardin ISD classes resume Monday Sept. 29th.

Post-Ike Crime: Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputies have been in overdrive dealing with criminals and helping those affected by the hurricane. Sheriff’s Captain Chip Fairchild said there have been fifteen arrests for major thefts and burglaries since the storm. He said area pawnshops and local citizens provided tips to help track down the suspects.

Schools: Devers ISD students head back Thursday and classes resume in the Tarkington school district on Wednesday. Lee College in Baytown is set to resume classes on Thursday. Anahuac ISD will be opening for students on Friday.

TVE: Next month marks the 100th Anniversary of what would become the Trinity Valley Exposition and President Donny Smith said storm damage or not, activities will go on. There was major roof damage to the exposition hall and some of the permanent food booths but work is being done on those. The trail ride, the week before the event is effectively canceled but the rodeo, livestock show, youth auction, vendors, etc. are “go”.

Appeal for Hay: Liberty County Judge Phil Fitzgerald made an appeal to try and get help for our neighbors in Chambers County.  If you can donate, or sell at a fair price, bales of hay the assembly point for hay transport will be at the old Wal-mart store on North Main in Liberty.  From there Liberty County will get the trucks to move the hay to Chambers County. Football: Hardin, Liberty and Hull-Daisetta are gearing up for high school football games. Hardin plays Hemphill Saturday at 2 p.m. at home in Hornet Stadium. Liberty hosts Splendora with a 7:30 kick off Saturday night. All Nine Sports will broadcast the Liberty game starting around 7:20 p.m. Hull-Daisetta travels to Warren Friday night for a 7:30 kick off. Dayton’s next game is tentatively set for Tuesday Sept. 30th.

School Closings: All school districts in Liberty Co. have canceled classes for today and Friday. Superintendents agreed it was as much for the potential for heavy traffic from those evacuating ahead of Ike as the potential for bad weather. Most have also canceled extra curricular activities.

Killer Escapes: Tuesday evening, Marlow Wayne Reynolds escaped from the Stringfellow Unit near Rosharon in Brazoria County. He was serving a 40-year prison sentence following his conviction in Liberty County for a Sept. 2003 murder. Multiple sources indicate that Marlow Reynolds allegedly made threats while in prison against individuals involved in his prosecution. Hugh Bishop with the Liberty County Sheriffs Office said they have notified those involved in the trial. Reynolds is 6 ‘ tall and 186 pounds. He is described as having a ruddy complexion, hazel eyes, and sandy hair.  He has a cut scar on the left side of his forehead and another scar on the outside of his right thigh.  He should be considered armed and dangerous. Officials say do not approach him, instead call 911.

Chambers Co. Political: Recent resignations from offices in Chambers County have opened two spots the ballot.  Heather Hawthorne, Chambers County Clerk said for the position of district clerk, the Republican party nominated Patty Henry, the Democrats picked Melissa Thomas and running, as an independent is Cheryl Sanders.  For the commissioner Pct. 2 spot, the Republican party has David “Bubba” Abernathy, the Democrats named Mike Cubic and Monroe Kreuzer has signed up to run as an independent.

Job Outlook: A comparison look at the job market for Houston, Beaumont and nation wide shows the Houston market, which includes Liberty and Chambers counties, is outpacing the nation as a whole in new jobs. According to the quarterly Manpower Employment Outlook Survey, 40 % of the companies surveyed in Houston plan to hire more employees in the forth quarter of this year compared to 22 % nationally. In Beaumont, the same survey shows while job growth is expected to be slower than the national average, the projected job loss is much less. In the Golden Triangle, just 7 % said they plan to add employees but none said they would reduce staff. At the national level, 13 % of companies surveyed said they would be reducing payroll.

Commissioners: Liberty County Commissioners voted 2-1 to approve the salary raises for county elected officials. The lone no vote came from Commissioner Pct. #4 Norman Brown who said he could not vote for an increase knowing county employees would not receive the same percentage of increase in their pay.  Commissioners also approved a renewal of the contract between Liberty County and the US Marshal’s Service for use of the firing range near Plum Grove.  The contract will pay the county $24,600 for use of the range for training over the next year.

Dayton City Council: Dayton City Council Monday night approved both the budget for 2008-2009 and the tax rate of .6852 per $100 of valuation.

Just in Case: Just in case Hurricane Ike makes a sudden turn back to the north, Emergency officials are asking special needs residents to remain alert and ready. Animal Needs: Should an evacuation be called, now or anytime in the future, the Liberty County Animals Needs Committee reminds folks pets need to be taken to insure they are properly transported and taken care of during an evacuation event.  Pets should have leashes, collars, current vaccination records and identification on their collars. Those pets that will ride on evacuation buses for special-needs residents should be in a pet carrier or be muzzled.

Dayton School Messenger: What used to take several hours now can be accomplished in a matter of minutes. Suzanne Chachere Director of Technology for Dayton ISD said their new web based messenger system can notify parents of a variety of things, from a single call to one number for a student missing class to a district wide notification of every parent or guardian of every student. She said the computerized system called “school messenger” called over 3,300 numbers the day before class began to remind parents of the early start time, and completed the job in less than 10 minutes.

Be Prepared: Emergency management agencies across the state are reminding folks whenever a storm is in the gulf there are preliminary steps those along the coast should take. Keep your vehicle filled with fuel; check your emergency supply kit – which should include a flashlight, extra batteries, eyeglasses, important documents, insurance information, medications, and special products for babies, the elderly and medically fragile family members. Experts say know ahead of time the evacuation routes for your area should an evacuation be called. If an evacuation is called, take along water and snacks to be prepared for congested traffic.

U.S. 90 Project: TxDOT will try again to rebuild the U.S. 90 and Union Pacific Railroad Crossing in Dayton. That work is set to start at 5 a.m. this coming Sunday. Those traveling on U.S. 90 in Dayton will have to take a several mile detour. Westbound traffic will be routed south on State Highway 146, then west of FM 1413. Drivers will follow that Farm to Market road around to U.S. 90. Just reverse the route for eastbound traffic. U.S. 90 is expected to remain closed for 48 hours while workers replace the large box culverts underneath the roadway.

Hurricane Ike: Hurricane Ike was over Cuba Sunday, angling toward the Gulf of Mexico. Computer models for the now Category 4 hurricane show Ike may strike the U.S. Gulf Coast anywhere from southeast Texas to east Alabama. The five-day computer model shows possible landfall this Friday or Saturday within that zone. Tune in to KSHN or your favorite source all week for the latest information on this monster storm. What Does it Mean? We have heard the term “mandatory evacuation” used during some past emergencies. Sheriff Greg Arthur said if a mandatory evacuation is ordered and you choose not to leave, that means emergency services may not be available to you until the event passes. It is a way of saying, if you choose to stay, no one will force you to leave, but for the most part, you’re kind of on your own until the worst is over.

****************************************************Name Off Ballot: It’s still two months before the November 4th General Election, but Democrat Precinct 3 Constable Danny Frankum no longer has a challenger. On August 29, Republican candidate James Miles asked Liberty County Clerk Dellia Sellers to remove his name from the ballot. With that letter in hand, Dellia Sellers made the change to the ballot.

High School Football: The Dayton Broncos lost 42-21 to the Friendswood Mustangs Friday night. The Liberty Panthers also lost Friday, falling 34-20 to Hamshire-Fannett. Post Labor Day Enrollment: After the Labor Day holiday, the student body population in most school districts traditionally grows, as was the case this year. The largest growth over first day totals was in Dayton where they expanded by 269 students from the first day of school. Cleveland ISD also saw a substantial jump, with 182 more kids on campuses than they had the first day.  Devers ISD added 1, Hardin jumped up by 73, Hull-Daisetta grew by 16 students and in Liberty they had a growth of 48 students from the first day of class to the day after Labor Day. As for Tarkington, we don’t have numbers for that district as of yet.

Chambers Co. District Clerk: Longtime District Clerk in Chambers County, Robert B. Scherer, Jr. is stepping down.  He has served in that office since October 1972. The office sort of runs in the Scherer family. His grandfather, Walter A. Scherer, held the office from 1923 until his death in November 1928. After his death, Chambers County Commissioners and the District Judge appointed Walter A. Scherer’s widow, Annie Scherer as his successor. She served until 1940. Current District Clerk Robert Scherer’s last day in office is September 30th.

Fall Public Hunts: There are a number of fall hunting opportunities on the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge is accepting applications for archery, upland and muzzleloader hunts. On Monday Refuge manager Stuart Marcus said they will be accepting lottery applications for waterfowl and big game hunting. Applications are available on line. Killer Sentenced: Following the conviction of Rodney Strickland last Friday, yesterday a jury in the 75th District Court sentenced him to 60 years in prison and assessed a $10,000 fine. District Attorney Mike Little said it would be 30 years before the now 52-year-old man would be eligible for parole. Rodney Strickland was convicted of murder in the shooting death of his wife in January 2007. Mary Strickland was the widow of fallen Liberty County Deputy Earl McFarland.

Business Closes and Moves: The Video City store in Liberty will close the doors permanently on Saturday.  The one in Dayton will continue to operate. As for what will happen to the space, Matt Harris of Pelco Construction, who owns that shopping center, said his company will do a major remodeling of both that location and the one next door that once housed the Sherwin Williams store.  Merged together the 8,900 square foot location will become the new home of the Family Dollar store, now on the south end of the same shopping center, sometime after Christmas.

TCEQ: Recently the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality levied a fine against a Dayton company, Environmental Processing Systems, L.C. for violations at an underground injection non-hazardous waste disposal well on Hatcherville road south of Dayton. EPS was assessed a $51,000 penalty for not maintaining records and other violations.

New Sirens: The Dayton Police Department is testing a new type of siren on one of their police cars. This new siren is called the “Rumbler” is a supplement to what is already in use. This deep base siren sends out a vibration, which should alert the driver to look around and hopefully see the approaching emergency vehicle. One Dayton officer compared the effect to that of those noisy boom boxes that teenagers have in their cars.  The officer said you could feel them as well as hear them.

Buses: The Liberty County Cancer Awareness Network in cooperation with the Liberty County Veterans Service office take buses each Wednesday and Thursday to MD Anderson Hospital and VA Hospital in Houston. The vans are for veterans and Liberty County residents who do not have transportation to get to those major medical facilities.  The van leaves each Wednesday and Thursday from the VFW Hall on Main Street in Liberty, at 6:30 a.m. with a stop in Dayton at the Brookshire Brothers. Wreck on 321: A wreck on SH 321 late Sunday night resulted in two people being taken to Houston by air ambulance. Information indicates a northbound sedan on Hwy. 321 stuck a southbound SUV. The driver of the sedan and passenger in the SUV were flown to Houston. The identities of those injured was not available. While emergency personnel were working the accident, a driver ignored directions of emergency workers, sped through the accident scene nearly hitting several people. The car is described as a maroon Ford Mustang. Anyone with information should call Liberty Co. SO at 936 336 4500.

Weather: As the remnants of Gustav continue to make its way into north east Texas, folks from the National Weather Service are saying there is the possibility for flood producing rains.  The greatest threat is for areas north of Liberty County, however residents should continue to monitor the situation.

Bluebonnet Gas: Natural gas service to the communities of Devers, Raywood, Hull and Daisetta was shut off Sunday evening. Now, according to local manager for Bluebonnet, John Wright service has been restored to the main station.  It will however take some time to get each individual service restored.

Drunken Drivers: Drivers in Liberty Co. suspected of driving under the influence who refuse to blow into a breathalyzer may be taken to jail where a blood search warrant will be executed to gather evidence for prosecution.  Assistant Co. Attorney Gary Bunyard said it’s a team effort between the Liberty Co. DA Office, Liberty Co. Attorney’s Office and most law enforcement throughout the county.  Mr. Bunyard said it began in December with the “Operation No Refusal Holiday”.
