Benefit for Deputy Whitten hailed a success

Saturday’s benefit for Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Whitten has been hailed a huge success with volunteers raising more than $104,000 for the wounded officer. It has been widely reported that Deputy Whitten was critically wounded back on May 29 when he was shot while responding to multiple shootings at B Dependable Plumbing on State Highway 321 near Cleveland. The bullet that stuck Deputy Whitten’s neck and spine caused trauma and damage so extensive that he has only limited motion in just his neck and head and a small area on the right side of his body. Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader said he was very appreciative of all of the people from around the region who showed up to help a wounded hero. The fund raiser was organized by a group of law enforcement officers and friends, and it was held at Trinity Armory in Cleveland. That business is owned by Jack Wieghat and his father, Splendora Police Chief Wally Wieghat. Sheriff Rader tipped his hat to the business owners for holding the fundraiser at their facility. Again, Saturday’s fundraiser for Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Whitten reportedly raised more than $104,000 to help the wounded deputy and his family. The day’s events included live music, barbecue plates, a three-gun competition, raffles, auctions, a motorcycle poker run as well as a truck, car, jeep and motorcycle show.
