LHS Lit Crit claims second at state meet

The Liberty High School Literary Criticism team placed second at the state meet over the weekend. Longtime team Coach Randy Gunter said the Liberty team missed out on first place by just one point out of a total of 300. In the individual Lit Crit state competition, LHS senior Emily Connelly claimed second. Teammates TaNia Donatto and Keaton Parker – also seniors - placed fourth and fifth, respectively. LHS junior Gavin Deshotel was the eleventh place finisher in the state academic competition. The UIL Literary Criticism Contest is a 90-minute test assessing student knowledge of concepts associated with literary analysis, authors, and works that represent English-language literary history as well as some classical and international influences. Coach Randy Gunter said there are more than 500,000 facts associated with that testing. Of note, the Panthers Lit Crit squad has advanced to the state tournament 15 of the last 16 years, winning the event eight times. Even in that one year when Liberty’s team didn’t advance to state, one of its team members went as an individual competitor. Again, the Liberty High School Literary Criticism team claimed second place at that state meet over the weekend with team member Emily Connelly earning second place as an individual. We will have more on this year’s Lit Crit team, including comments from team coach Randy Gunter, in coming newscasts.
