Devers mayor speaks out against STARR testing

Devers Mayor Steve Horelica plans to issue a proclamation during Tuesday night’s city council meeting banning the state’s STARR assessment within the Devers city limits. The mayor, who is also a fifth grade teacher at Devers Elementary School, believes the STARR test is not an accurate measurement of all students. He said educators and lawmakers need to come up with better ways to measure student success. The Devers mayor and school teacher said he is not alone in his views, but he believes many people are afraid to speak up. With that in mind, the Devers mayor said it is time for people to come together to demand a change to the Texas Educator student assessment system. Devers Superintendent Elizabeth Harris did not return our call for comment on the mayor’s plan. Once again, Devers Mayor Steve Horelica said he will issue a proclamation banning the state’s STARR assessment within the Devers city limits. While he acknowledges his actions won’t carry the weight of law, he hopes his voice joining in unison with that of other likeminded individuals will bring about a change to the state’s student assessment process. Devers City Council meets tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the city building.
