Deputy Cummins on Basic Peace Officer Academy
We reported that instruction in the Basic Peace Officers Academy offered by the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office last month. The Sheriff’s Office Training Coordinator is Deputy Josh Cummins. Speaking recently to the Liberty Rotary Club, Deputy Cummins said physical defense training offered to cadets includes hand to hand combat, use of TASERs, batons and pepper spray. Deputy Cummins said the training use of pepper spray includes acknowledging what many may not realize. That deploying pepper spray on a suspect may also affect the officer using it. Pepper spray is also known as O.C. Spray. The O.C. stands for oleoresin capsicum. That is the chemical derived from ground hot peppers used to make the painful, eye-irritating spray.
