New police chiefs on the job in Dayton, Liberty

In an unusual set of circumstances, both Liberty and Dayton have new city police chiefs on the job starting this week. Tuesday night Liberty City Council promoted veteran officer Gary Martin to be the city’s new police chief. Also, Monday was the first day on the job for Dayton’s new police chief, Robert Vine. First, we reported that Gary Martin had been serving as Interim Liberty Police Chief following the retirement of former chief Thomas Claunch in November. At Tuesday’s meeting, Gary Martin told council he would make them proud. Gary Martin and wife Shanna and their two children live in Devers. Liberty’s new police chief will oversee a department with around 30 employees – 19 of them sworn police officers.  Chief Martin has spent most of his 20 plus years in law enforcement with Liberty PD. As reported the Dayton City Council hired Robert Vine as their new police chief, back on November 19th. Chief Vine comes from the city of Gladewater. That’s the same city as Dayton’s current city manager Theo Melancon. Mr. Vine said he and Mr. Melancon had worked well together in Gladewater but it is the potential for growth that brought him Dayton. Dayton PD’s Tammy Alexander said the department is looking forward to working with their new chief. Robert Vine spent the first 16 years of his law enforcement career in the Northeast Texas City of Mt. Pleasant. Then he served the last five years as Gladewater Police Chief. Robert Vine and wife Kristi have five children – 4 at home and 1 at college. Once again, it turns out both Liberty and Dayton’s new police chiefs’ started their new jobs this week. New Dayton PD Chief Robert Vine started Monday and Liberty’s new chief Gary Martin took over the reins of his new job Tuesday night.
