Liberty hires familiar face as police chief

Liberty City Council met Tuesday and promoted longtime police department supervisor Gary Martin to be the city’s new police chief. We reported Gary Martin, a more than 21-year veteran of law enforcement – most of that time with Liberty PD – has been serving as the interim Liberty police chief since the departure of Thomas Claunch in November. In giving his recommendation to Liberty City Council, City Manager Tom Warner pointed out that Gary Martin had risen through the ranks, serving in virtually every capacity to perform the duties of Liberty police officer. There will be an official ceremony on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Liberty Police Department on Lakeland Drive, though Gary Martin assumes the full duties of Liberty police chief immediately. In other action Tuesday, Liberty council voted to call two elections to be held May 4. The Liberty City Council General Election is for three seats on council. Dennis Beasley, Diane Huddleston and Libby Simonson all have expiring terms. Mr. Beasley and Mrs. Simonson say they will seek new terms. Ms. Huddleston said she had not yet made up her mind. The candidate filing period for the General Election does not begin until January 16. Liberty City Council also called a Special City Council Election to fill the seat left vacant by the resignation of Paul Glazener. That Special Election will also be held on May 4, but the candidate filing begins immediately – today – and continues weekdays through March 4. Candidate filing information is available at Liberty City Hall during business hours, and filing information will also be posted at the Liberty city website. Link there from kshn.com. For questions, call Liberty City Hall at 936-336-3684. Tuesday’s meeting also included Liberty City Council’s notification the city would receive an additional $3 million from the Sam Rayburn Municipal Agency Cambridge Project. More on that in future newscasts.
