Popular Champion Lake remains closed

We have reported a large culvert damaged by Hurricane Harvey flood waters has resulted in the closure of the only access road to the Champion Lake Public Use Area south of Dayton. Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus said the process that will lead to repairs of the now unsafe culvert is moving forward. He said unfortunately that forward motion is not very fast. Mr. Marcus said the Champion Lake Public Use Area is a favorite spot for fishing, hunting and crabbing. If all goes well, the flood damaged culvert can be replaced and the access road to the public use area reopened in a few months. Stuart Marcus said the next step is getting a design plan for the project approved. For more information call the Refuge office in Liberty at 936-336-9786.
