Officer of the Year: Each year the 100 Club of Houston names a law enforcement officer of the year. The peace officer chosen is a hero that has gone above and beyond the call of duty. The 2019 Officer of the Year is Liberty County Deputy Sheriff Richard Whitten. Deputy Whitten chased a fleeing murder suspect who subsequently shot Deputy Whitten in the neck. Monday Deputy Whitten died at a Houston Medical Facility. The 100 Club is a non-profit organization created to assist families of fallen first responders and to offer financial assistance. On Friday Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader was notified by mail that Deputy Richard Whitten was named 100 Club of Houston Officer of the year for 2019. On Monday Deputy Whitten, who was paralyzed from a gun shot wound to the neck last May, died of an apparent heart attack during physical therapy treatment.
Deputy Dies: Liberty County Deputy Richard Whitten died Monday of an apparent heart attack while recovering from a gunshot wound sustained in May of 2019.We reported in May of last year that Deputy Whitten was wounded when confronting the suspect in a separate shooting at B Dependable Plumbing on State Highway 321 near Cleveland. We reported, at the time, about the shooting that claimed two lives and severely injured two others. One critically injured was Deputy Whitten. Captain Ken DeFoor with the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office said Deputy Whitten was off duty when he spotted the suspect’s vehicle. In a confrontation with that suspect, Deputy Whitten was shot in the neck. Later, after a standoff, the shooter identified as Pavol Vido died that same day of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Deputy Whitten was 51 years of age and leaves behind a wife and children. Funeral Services are pending at Neal Funeral Home in Cleveland.
James Carson: James Carson is running for the office of Precinct 1 County Commissioner for Liberty Co. Mr. Carson has been in law enforcement for 25 years. On a recent Party Line program Carson touted his law enforcement experience and said he is running for Commissioner because of roads. James Carson is challenging Precinct 1 County Commissioner Bruce Karbowski. Early voting is Tuesday February 18th through Friday February 28th. Weekday voting is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except February 27th and February 28th voting is extended from 7 a.m. to 7 .p.m. There are four early voting locations. - the Jack Hartel Community Building in Liberty, the Dayton Community Center, the Hardin City Hall and Cleveland Civic Center. Election Day voting is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday March 3rd .
January Rainfall: The City of Liberty has started the New Year with what is described as an average amount of rainfall for January. KSHN maintains official records for the U.S. Weather Service here in south Liberty County. In January last year, the city of Liberty recorded 7.70 inches of rain. For this January, Liberty registered 4.50 inches of the wet stuff. That is eight-tenth of an inch more than the January historical average of 4.42 inches.
Obits: Michael Walter Semien Sr. -age 60, of Ames. Funeral service will be held Saturday February 8, 2PM in Cornerstone Church in Liberty. Visitation will be held two hours prior to the service beginning at noon. Burial will immediately follow the service in Palms Memorial Park. ************************************************
