Puppy Killed: A Dayton man was jailed in Montgomery County District after neighbors reported him abusing his dog. According to the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office 34-year-old Joseph Dewayne Lloyd of Dayton has been charged with Cruelty to Non-Livestock Animals. Last week the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office was called to a home in the New Caney area after several concerned neighbors heard Lloyd allegedly beating his dog inside of his home. The dog, said to be a young German Shepherd puppy was found dead in a nearby dumpster. Lloyd allegedly killed the puppy through kicking and strangulation. Lloyd was arrested and his bond was set at $5,000. In 2017 the State Legislature increased the punishment for this type of crime to a third degree felony, which carries a punishment range of 2 to 10 years in prison.

Boots-n-Bandanas: Mark your calendars - Court Appointed Special Advocates of Liberty and Chambers Counties will hold its Boots-N-Bandanas Benefit on Saturday, February 22, at the Dayton Community Center. Melanie Cotten community outreach specialist for CASA of Liberty and Chambers Counties said this event is not only a fundraiser, it allows CASA to showcase what they do. CASA volunteer advocates work on behalf of a child that has been removed from their home by Child Protective Services. Individual tickets to the Boots-N-Bandanas are $30. A table of 10 is $300 dollars. Tickets are available at bootsandbandanas.eventbrite.com. Once more, the CASA of Liberty and Chambers Counties’ Boots-N-Bandanas Benefit is Saturday, February 22, from 6:30 to 11 p.m. in the Dayton Community Center. Candidate Bergman: Jennifer Bergman is running for the office of District Attorney of Liberty County. Ms. Bergman is a lifelong Cleveland Resident who as an attorney has worked in both prosecution and defense. Jennifer Bergman is challenging 2 term Incumbent District Attorney Logan Pickett. Early voting is Tuesday February 18th through Friday February 28th. Weekdays’ voting is from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. except February 27th and February 28th voting is extended from 7 a.m. to 7 .p.m. Early voting locations are at four locations - the Jack Hartel Community Building in Liberty, the Dayton Community Center, the Hardin City Hall and the Cleveland Civic Center. Election Day voting is 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday March 3rd at the voting precincts where registered voters reside.

Soccer: The Dayton Broncos outstanding soccer program opened District play with victories over the Barber Hill Eagles and they did it with a two game sweep. Head soccer coach Jed Garner said the Bronco boys JV set the tone with a 1-0 win on an Adrian Galvan goal. Then came the district opener for the Dayton Varsity soccer team and they dominated the Barbers Hill Eagles in a 3-0 shutout. Bronco Alex Lopez stepped up big on defense as David Perez, Jaime Pineda and Mario Puente each had one goal in this team effort. That improves the Bronco varsity to 12 wins -1 loss & 3 ties overall, and 1-0 in League play. Up next Dayton plays host to Vidor Friday night.

Obits: Walter George Shaw, Sr., 74, of Vidor passed away January 26, 2020 in Dayton. Services for Mr. Shaw will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Magnolia Park Cemetery.
