Mercury: We have had a report of a level of mercury showing up in the city of Dayton near a school bus stop. That report sent City of Dayton first responders, Dayton School officials, plus trained experts of the Liberty County Hazardous Material team and the Liberty County Fire Marshal's Office into action Monday evening. According to a press release from The Dayton Police Department, it was approximately 5 PM Monday when a call came into the Dayton Police Department that students waiting on their bus on N. Winfree Street may have come into contact with an unknown amount of Mercury Monday morning. Authorities did find a small amount of mercury in the Cedar Ridge Apartments parking lot near the school bus stop. Liberty County Hazmat was able to contain the mercury found. The hazmat team then decontaminated the area. We are told mercury is a heavy metal that can be highly toxic to humans. You can get more information about mercury exposure on-line - at or by calling the poison center hot line at 800-222-12-22. If anyone has information on this instance of mercury exposure, please call the Dayton Police Department at (936) 258-7621. No adverse health issues have been reported. Dayton ISD said City officials determined the source was not a Dayton student.

Bids for the work ranged from $18,500 to $41,450. Commissioners approved the $18,500 bid from Trinity Valley HVAC Services formally know as Chapman A/C.
