Reading Buddies: Studies indicate children who are not reading on grade level by the end of 3rd grade are 4 times more likely to become high school dropouts. In Dayton ISD, there’s a program that allows volunteers to make a real. Become a Reading Buddy and help a child change their future in only 30 minutes/week. Reading buddies is a program in which two or more individuals read together. For example, volunteers from the community can read with students of all ages. Reading to younger kids can help them develop a love of reading plus a greater motivation to read. DISD Kimmie Brown Elementary School Principal Jessica Ott said making time for a student at the elementary level can make a difference in their future. The Reading Buddy spends 30 minutes per week reading to, or with, a DISD elementary school student. To participate call DISD Administration at 936 258 2667.
