Pickup Map: We have reported the City of Liberty and their solid waste contractor, Frontier Waste Solutions, will begin once a week waste pickup starting January 20th. That‘s Monday. This week, Frontier Waste Solutions has been dropping off the big 96 gallon containers to homes throughout the city. A color coded routing map of pickup days in the city of Liberty is available at KSHN.COM
Otto: John Otto, a former state representative for this State house district, has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. We are told by good friend Brooks Hiller that John Otto is doing well and undergoing treatment at M.D. Anderson in Houston. Representative Otto served several terms in the Texas State Legislature, representing this house district, and had risen to a position of major influence in Texas government leadership. After his political retirement and the selling of his CPA accounting service, John then went to work for his Alma Mater –Texas A & M University. That moved him and wife Nancy to College Station– His position there has him working closely with A & M Chancellor John Sharp, in an executive leadership position. Brooks Hiller, who posted the news about John Otto on social media, asked for prayers from his many friends and acquaintances from his home town of Dayton and across the Lone Star State as John continues his treatment. We join Brooks in that request.
Mens Health Fair: A reminder tomorrow - the Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center and KSHN.COM are again hosting the long running men’s prostate screening clinic and men’s health fair. That free men’s health fair is from 8 until noon at Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center, 1353 North Travis in Liberty. Test results will be mailed to those men who attend within a few days
Closed For MLK Day: Monday marks the annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday. The Liberty County Courthouse and annexes plus all municipal offices in Liberty, Cleveland and Dayton will be closed Monday for the national holiday. Banks and post offices will also be closed. Students in six of the seven school districts in Liberty County are out of school Monday with only Devers ISD students attending classes. MLK Day honors the memory of Dr. King, who was assassinated in April 1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. One of the leader’s of America’s civil rights movement, Martin Luther King Jr. received the Nobel Peace Prize and was posthumously awarded both the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is celebrated nationally on the third Monday each January around his birthday.
Obits: Funeral service pending for Kenneth Herron, 81 of Liberty.
