Fire: Six different fire departments were called to a fire in Sam Houston Lake Estates Tuesday night- that’s in North East Liberty Co. . They were called to battle a blaze involving 2 single wide mobile homes, 1 travel trailer 1 small truck plus 3-four wheelers. Liberty County Fire Marshal Bill Hergemueller said the fire started from a burn pile behind one of the trailers that caused the trailers to catch on fire. Due to the muddy, narrow roadway to the homes, Fire Marshal Hergemueller said they had to use numerous small brush trucks to reach and fight the blaze. The Tarkington, Cleveland, Kenefick, Cypress Lakes, Hwy 321 and North Liberty County Volunteer Fire Departments all responded. The call came in at 6:30 pm Tuesday and the volunteers were all released at around 10 pm Tuesday night.
Debris in Liberty: Storm Debris removal began Wednesday in the City of Liberty by a contracted company called DRC Emergency Services. Debris placed at the curb of the homes will be picked up. Chris Jarman, Assistant City Manager, said there are things resident’s can do to make debris removal easier. Liberty citizens are urged to separate materials into specific debris types. Jarman said if you have already put storm debris out it’s ok if it is not separated. City officials anticipate DRC will complete the first pass for debris removal by October 25th. If more pickup is needed call 936-336-3684. This operation is to remove storm debris in the City of Liberty only and does not include material removal from commercial businesses.
Dayton Sidewalks: Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said the city is currently in phase two of the four phase sidewalk project. Funding for this project comes from the “Safe Routes to school Program” or SRTS. That’s a federal program managed by the Texas Department of Transportation. The goal of SRTS is to encourage children in grades - kindergarten though eighth grade including kids with disabilities to walk or bike to school. The new sidewalks are meant to offer a safer and more appealing transportation alternative.
Tennis: The Dayton boys Tennis team wrapped up their fall schedule Tuesday night. According to Coach Josh Moore the Bronco boys dropped their final match to Nederland 17-2. Nederland is currently ranked 8th in Texas Class 5A. Coach Moore said he is pleased with the progress of his team this fall. He looks for more improvement this spring. Coach Moore said they will take a week off and start preparing for the spring season.
