Volume 34, No. 148 Friday, September 6, 2019
School Enrollment: Student enrollment stabilizes after the Labor Day holiday. So here’s an updated enrollment count from Tuesday. The Cleveland Independent School District now has 7,450 students, 993 kids over Labor Day last year. In the Dayton ISD, officials report a growth of 103 students over the same time frame a year ago. Dayton now has 5,509 students maintaining DISD as the second largest school district in this county. In the Liberty ISD, Tuesday’s student count is 2,259. That’s an increase of 63 kids from last year. Hull-Daisetta, has 513 registered for class. That’s up 22 from last year. Tarkington ISD reports enrollment of 1,887. In that case its up 64 students from the previous year. Devers ISD has 198 in class now up 20 after Labor Day last year, pre-K thru 8. Hardin ISD has enrollment of 1415 students, down 34 from last year.
New Sheriffs Department: We reported earlier on Liberty County Judge Jay Knight’s goal for more efficiency to accommodate the influx of population. One of three projects, he’d like to see, would be a new law enforcement center. Wednesday Liberty County Commissioners met in a special called meeting. That’s when commissioners voted to enter into a contract to buy property on State Highway 146 just north of the North Main Baptist Church. County Judge Jay Knight said Liberty County has entered into a $50,000 earnest money contract. Purchase closing is on the site adjacent to the city water tower is expected in 90 days.
Cornyn Challenger: Liberty Co. resident, Dwayne Stovall, a business owner and lifelong Republican, is chasing the Republican nomination for the office of United States Senator. That race will pit him against long time senior Senator John Cornyn. Mr. Stovall said, in his announcement, he believes Cornyn’s standing among conservatives is on the decline in Texas. The local conservative ran once before against Cornyn with 8 candidates on the ballot. Stovall finished third then..
Permanent Dayton street closure: Beginning Monday, September 9, N. Church St. will be permanently closed between Cook St. and Hwy 90. The street, adjacent to City Hall, other City’s Offices and the CrossRoads Park will be converted to a pedestrian walkway between each facility. Dayton City Council approved that permanent closure at their August meeting due to safety concerns on both North and South Church Streets. The closure reduces the potential for congestion while hopefully streamlining traffic flow on US 90. Access to South Church St. from Hwy 90 will not be affected in either direction.
Obituary CORRECTION:…Betty Lou Dever, 75, of Dayton. Service is Saturday- 11 a.m. at Pleasant Hill Baptist in Dayton (WFS).
