Stripes Arrest: On Wednesday, August 7, detectives with the Dayton Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division along with members of the Harris County Pct.3 Criminal Investigation Unit conducted a search warrant and felony arrest warrant at 16119 Palm St. in Channelview. The warrants were part of the ongoing investigation of an Aggravated Robbery of the Stripes Convenience Store in Dayton. Arrested was Daniel Gallegos 18 of Channelview charged with Aggravated Robbery and the recovery of an AR-15 style rifle believed to have been used in the robbery. Gallegos was transported to the Harris County Jail and will be extradited back to Liberty county.

Firefighter Killed: Authorities say a Jared Snell of Tarkington was killed in a Friday night crash on State Highway 105 near CR 2234. According to Trooper Spencer Shaw with the Texas Department of Public Safety The firefighter for Atascocito Fire Department was traveling eastbound on SH 105 when he attempted to pass another vehicle and drove straight into the path of an 18-wheeler hauling CO2 canisters. Both vehicles were engulfed in flames immediately after impact. The driver of the 18-wheeler leaped from the truck and survived. The Snell died in the crash. According to Trooper Shaw, the driver of the 18-wheeler suffered minor injuries and was taken by ground ambulance by Liberty County EMS to HCA in Cleveland.

Upcoming City Council: Tomorrow night, Liberty City Council will meet in their regular meeting. On the agenda for Tuesday is for council to vote on setting the tax rate for the upcoming budget year. The proposed rate is $0.05851 cents per $100 of valuation. This is also the current year’s tax rate, with the city staff recommendation to keep the rate the same. Other items on the upcoming Liberty City Council agenda will be discussion on the Brazos Transit contract. The new contract, if approved by city council, would go into affect in 2020 and increase to $5,512.50 annually. According to the proposal made by Brazos Transit, this would be the first increase in rate since 1994.

Liberty Dayton 500: A big crowd was on hand Friday night in the Dayton Community center for the 30th annual Liberty Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce 500 fund raiser. Grand prize winner had a choice of either a Kubota RTV or a Kubota 60 inch Zero turn mower. That winner was Jay Kapadia, new owner of the Hardin Grocery & Meat Market.
