Courthouse Security: A new security team is in place at the Liberty County Courthouse under the direction of Liberty County District Attorney Logan Pickett. The district attorney’s chief investigator, Ivan Pierce, supervises the law enforcement personnel, and there is a courthouse security committee that sets policy. Courthouse security in Texas is traditionally under the direction of the sheriff’s office, but commissioners made the change last year. During Tuesday’s commissioners’ court meeting, 75th District Court Judge Mark Morefield was there to praise the efforts of that new courthouse security team. He also recognized four officers for their proactive approach that led to the quick apprehension of a criminal defendant who fled, back in April, during the middle of his felony trial. Members of the new courthouse security team who were honored Tuesday with a Certificate of Merit were law enforcement officers Willard “JR” Ungles, Jasmine Fontenot, Perk Ostrewich and Bruce Gilchrist.
DVFD BBQ: The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual fund-raiser BBQ tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or until sold out at the new fire department on S.H. 321 at Bill Moreau Drive in Dayton. Those $12 BBQ plates include brisket or chicken and sausage along with beans, rice, onions, pickles and bread. All proceeds benefit the Dayton VFD.
