Capital Murder Trial: A capital murder trial is under way in the 75th District Court of Judge Mark Morefield. 26-year-old Antonio Jerrell Ary of Sugarland is on trial for the 2015 murder of 28-year-old Ray Berger of Dayton. We reported Mr. Berger was shot to death at his residence on Elaine Street back on September 13, 2015. Jury selection was Monday with testimony getting under way later that day and continuing yesterday. The capital murder trial of Antonio Ary continues today in the 75th District courtroom on the third floor of the Liberty County Courthouse. Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.

Truck Theft Ring: An increase in truck thefts in north Liberty County since December 2018 and the recovery of seven of those trucks within the county have led Liberty County sheriff’s investigators to the conclusion that these pickup trucks have been used for human trafficking. When recovered, the rear windows of the trucks were totally blacked out and all rear seats and interior paneling had been removed. This gave enough room to carry from 8 to 10 people. The sheriff’s office linked 10 of these stolen vehicles to a small group of individuals from the Houston area and charged them with organized criminal activity. All were recently indicted. Investigators say it appears the stolen pickup trucks are being used for organized criminal activity such as smuggling contraband and human trafficking. Anyone with information is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 936-336-4500 or call the Multi-County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-392- STOP. All callers to Crime Stoppers will remain anonymous.

Scam Warning: Here’s a scam warning involving thieves calling area residents claiming to be with Social Security and telling the person they have some type of problem with their payments or account. Andy Hardwick, with Social Security in Houston, said these types of calls are scams. He said never give out personal information over the phone unless you are certain to whom you are speaking. If someone contacts you claiming to be with Social Security, hang up and call Social Security directly. The nationwide toll-free number is 800-772-1213, or you can contact the Beaumont office toll-free at 866-613-2864.
