Fatality Accident: We reported yesterday on Sunday night’s two-vehicle fatality accident on North Main Street. Liberty police have now identified the man who died in that accident as 24-year-old D’Angelo Jermal Edwin Godfrey of Beaumont. Mr. Godfrey was killed when his northbound passenger car veered into the path of a southbound dually pickup truck. Three people were taken by air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Their names have still not been released.
Boating Fatality: Three people are dead and another is in custody following a Sunday evening boating accident approximately a half mile from the Hugo Park Road boat ramp in the area of Old and Lost River and Cross Bayou. Those who died have been identified as Laura Kay Grant, 48, of Mont Belvieu, William Robert Bowles, 36, of Baytown, and Zachary Jackson Miles, 29, of Beach City. Five others were also injured. According to the Chambers County Sheriff's Office, Jacob Vernon Breaux, 23, of Baytown is charged with three counts of intoxication manslaughter and two counts of intoxication assault.
Whitten Benefit: Saturday’s benefit for Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Whitten raised more than $104,000 for the wounded officer. Deputy Whitten was critically wounded back on May 29 when he was shot while responding to multiple shootings at B Dependable Plumbing on State Highway 321 near Cleveland. He remains in Memorial Hermann Hospital undergoing treatment. Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader said he was very appreciative of all the volunteers and people who showed up to help a wounded hero.
AISD Rocket Team: The Anahuac ISD Rocket Team was in New Mexico over the weekend test firing a rocket on the Department of Defense’s White Sands Missile Range. The team is led by engineering teacher and sponsor Kirk Moore. He said the team’s 23-foot, 365-pound rocket reached a height of 1,391 feet. The Anahuac ISD team includes project leader Zack Kelly along with Gage Williams, Blane Daughtery, Dillon Bercher, Dylan Jircik, James Thomas Henry and Chase Cormier.
Obituaries: Margaret Juanita Koen, 89, of Hardin. Service is 2 p.m. today at North Main Baptist Church (F&F).
