Court at Law Discussions: Liberty County Commissioners Court held a special meeting yesterday to discuss two issues surrounding a new local County Court at Law. We’ve reported Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed a law on June 10 calling for the creation of additional courts in Texas, including a second County Court at Law here in Liberty County. Yesterday’s meeting included a discussion on a lease agreement for a 5,250-square-foot building at 1200 Highway 90 in Liberty. The county wants to sign a five-year lease on that building to house the tax office currently located in the courthouse. Commissioners took no action on that agreement until the landowners can review the lease proposal with their attorney. They did approve a $75,000 line-item transfer for renovations. That money will be used to make necessary changes to a leased facility to house the tax office when it does move, hopefully by Oct. 1. Then the old tax office space becomes the new County Court at Law.
Credit Union Breaking Ground: Mobil Oil Credit Union is breaking ground for their new branch office in Dayton. It’s set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, at 999 S.H. 146 South next to the Kwik Lube. A breakfast reception will follow at the Dayton Community Center.
Little Mermaid: All performances of the Valley Players production of “The Little Mermaid” are sold out, including the extra show time that was added a few days ago. However, organizers encourage those interested in seeing the musical to show up at the performance of their choice. There are always some cancellations, and they will do their best to find you a seat. They say nobody has ever been turned away. Tickets are $10, cash only - no credit cards. Those performances are at 7 p.m. on Thursdays - June 20 and 27, Fridays - June 21 and 28, and Saturdays - June 22 and 29. There are also 2 p.m. matinee performances on Sunday, June 23 and 30, plus Saturday, June 29. All performances are at the Humphreys-Burson Theatre, 1710 Sam Houston Street in Liberty.
Obituaries: Cora Beth Evans, 81, of Devers. Graveside is 4 p.m. Friday at Cooke Memorial Cemetery (AFS). Avalon Lee Lowe, 75, of Rye. Service is 1 p.m. Thursday at Solid Rock Full Gospel Church of Votaw (F&F).
