New Court at Law: Liberty County Commissioners Court will hold a special meeting this Wednesday to discuss two issues surrounding a new local County Court at Law. Liberty County Judge Jay Knight said Governor Abbott signed a new law on June 10 calling for the creation of additional courts across the state, including a second County Court at Law here in Liberty County. Judge Knight said that additional local court is necessary because of the burgeoning case loads in both the current Court at Law as well as the district courts in the county. Wednesday’s meeting will include a discussion on the possible locations for the new court. He said it will be located somewhere in the courthouse, and discussions have centered on moving the tax office to another location on U.S. 90. The other item on the agenda is for budget amendments. Those discussions are likely to involve the cost of relocating the tax office and making that area of the courthouse ready to house a Court at Law.
DISD Runoff Election: Dayton ISD voters will head to the polls tomorrow to cast ballots in the runoff election for Place 2 on the Dayton school board. We reported the Dayton school trustee election back on May 4th ended with a tie between Chris Shumaker and Barry Pruitt. Liberty County Clerk Lee Haidusek-Chambers reports, during the seven days of early voting that ended last Friday, a total of 555 residents of the Dayton school district have cast ballots. She said another four people voted absentee and there are two provisional ballots. Voting in the Dayton ISD runoff election is tomorrow from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Dayton Community Center, 801 S. Cleveland Street.
