Superintendent of the Year: Liberty ISD Superintendent Dr. Cody Abshier has been recognized as the regional recipient of the Texas Association of School Board’s 2019 Superintendent of the Year award. That moves him a step forward in the process for the statewide honor. We reported in March that the Liberty school board nominated Dr. Abshier for that recognition. Since 1984, that program has honored outstanding administrators for achievement and excellence in public school administration. According to the TASB website, honorees exhibit exemplary and visionary leadership toward improving student performance. They are chosen for their strong leadership skills, dedication to improving the quality of education in their districts, and commitment to public support and involvement in education.
Liberty Building Permits: Liberty City Council adopted new building permit fees and lifted the moratorium on issuing permits during Tuesday’s regular meeting. The new fees were caused by a change in state law enacted during the recently completed 86th Legislative Session. Liberty City Manager Tom Warner said the new fee structure no longer charges based on the value of improvements. He also said the change does not significantly alter the overall costs for those permits.
Champion Lake Reopens: Champion Lake Public Use Area south of Dayton will reopen tomorrow. The popular spot on the Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge has been closed to the public because of high water from flooding. However, Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus said waters there have receded below the pier, so Champion Lake will reopen tomorrow. It will be open daily from sunrise to sunset. Champion Lake is located at the end of County Road 417 off FM 1409 – that turnoff is 10 miles south of U.S. 90 in Dayton and has clearly marked signage.
Purse Bingo: Mark your calendars - one of the most popular local fundraisers is Bridgehaven’s Purse Bingo, and this year’s installment is coming up July 19 and 20 from 5 to 9:30 p.m. in the Dayton Community Center. Tickets go on sale at 9 a.m. June 24, tables only. For info, call Bridgehaven at 936-258-0400.
Obituaries: Charles Brad “C.B.” Roberts, 71, of Dayton. Service is 1 p.m. Friday at PSFH - Dayton.
