Volume 34, No. 111 Wednesday, June 12, 2019
New Hotels: Both the cities of Liberty and Dayton will soon be home to new hotels. Called a Sleep Inn and Suites, Liberty City Manager Tom Warner said about 15 or so of the 54 rooms planned in Liberty will be designed for extended stay. Over in Dayton, City Manager Theo Meloncon said the start date for the two hotels will be similar, sometime late this year or the start of next year. The new Sleep Inn and Suites in Liberty will be on Hwy 146 at FM 1011 while in Dayton that three-story, 66 room hotel will be on Hwy 90 near the Burger King restaurant. The Sleep Inns and Suites are a part of the Choice Hotels Corp.
Commissioners Court: During yesterday’s regular meeting, Liberty County Commissioners approved a change to the way routine and reoccurring expenses get paid. Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 345 on May 31. That bill was approved during the recently completed 86th Texas Legislative Session. It allows specified officers in certain counties to disperse or direct payment of county funds for salaries and expenses. Previously, even though those reoccurring items were part of a county’s adopted budget, each item still had to go before commissioners for approval before payment. The new law allows things like approved salaries, payroll deductions and jury payments already authorized in the county’s budget to be paid each time without going before the court again. So, with that recent change in state law and yesterday’s subsequent action by Liberty County Commissioners Court, the county will now be able pay those bills in a timely manner. The change allows the county to pay routine expenses upon submission of proper pay vouchers to the Liberty County auditor.
AniMeals: A new program has been established to provide pet food for animals belonging to local seniors who receive meals on wheels through the GRACE Initiative of South Liberty County. AniMeals of South Liberty County will deliver pet food once a month to those seniors in the meals on wheels program who also need assistance caring for their treasured companions.
