Deputy Whitten’s Condition: The family of Liberty County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Whitten has released another statement following last Wednesday’s shootings near Cleveland. As we reported, Deputy Whitten suffered a single gunshot to the neck and spine responding to multiple shootings at B Dependable Plumbing on State Highway 321. In the statement from his wife, Kami Whitten, and other family members, they report the bullet caused trauma and damage so extensive that, at this time, Deputy Whitten has only limited motion in just his neck and head and a small area on the right side of his body. Currently he needs assisted breathing, and the medical professionals in the intensive care unit at Memorial Hermann Hospital are reportedly doing what they can to keep him comfortable. Tami Whitten said her husband has been able to communicate during the past 48 hours, and his conversations have centered around concern for the other people involved in last week’s tragic shootings.
Tax Deadline: The official deadline for property owners to pay any remaining 2018 property taxes without incurring attorney collection costs is drawing near. The annual deadline for taxpayers to pay those property taxes without attorney fees that can be up to 20 percent is June 30. Since that falls on a Sunday this year, taxpayers have until Monday, July 1, to make those payments. Liberty County Tax Assessor Collector Ricky Brown said even paying a portion of property taxes owed could save taxpayers a substantial amount of money. For information, call the county tax office during business hours at 936-336-4633.
All-District 21-4A Softball: Seven Liberty Lady Panthers have been named to the All-District 21-4A first and second teams. Liberty sophomore Jaylen Prichard is the district’s Offensive Player of the Year. Her teammate, sophomore Kaci West, is Defensive Player of the Year. The Newcomer of the Year honor goes to Liberty ninth-grader Kylie Bishop. Turning to first team All-District 21-4A honors, those chosen include Lady Panthers Mikaelah Burkland, Baylee Chandler and Jo McGinnis. Second team all-district selection from Liberty is Bailey Webb. A tip of the hat to these Lady Panthers selected to the all-district team.
Obituaries: Jayce Lee Redmond, 5, of Liberty. Service 10 a.m. today at Our Mother of Mercy Cemetery of Ames (WFS).
