Vehicle Hits Gas Pump: A 30-year-old Houston man was taken by Life Flight air ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital early yesterday after his vehicle struck a gas pump and destroyed a small building at Dayton’s Brookshire Brothers. Dayton police report Kenneth Cleaver was westbound on Highway 90 when his vehicle crossed the center line, continued across the roadway and into the Brookshire Brothers parking lot. Then the vehicle struck the operators’ building and a gas pump, knocking it about 75 feet away. The pump caught fire but did not threaten any of its surroundings. The back of the vehicle lifted off the ground and, as it turned in the air, landed on a safety post used to protect the building. At last report, Kenneth Cleaver was in serious but stable condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital. Dayton police say alcohol and speed may have been factors in the crash. Brookshire Brothers personnel report the fueling station will be closed several days for repairs.
Trash Program Expands: Liberty City Council gave approval Tuesday for Frontier Waste Solutions to expand a pilot program for trash pick up introduced in the city last summer. We reported then the program introduced larger 96-gallon, two-wheel trash carts at selected areas of the city. That program was intended to determine if Liberty residents liked the larger carts. There is no additional cost to the city for allowing the program, and trash pick up in Liberty will still be twice a week. Council was in favor of expanding the program and instructed Liberty City Manager Tom Warner to proceed with Frontier’s plan.
