City & School Elections: The candidate filing period for May 4 city and school board elections continues through February 15 at the respective government entity’s administrative office. So far, there is one contested race for the Dayton school board. On Friday, Mark Richter filed to run for Position 2 on the Dayton ISD Board of Trustees. As reported, Chris Shumaker filed earlier. To date, longtime Position 2 incumbent Larry Wadzeck has not filed to run again. However, Position 1 incumbent Luke Chachere has filed for a new term on the Dayton school board. He has no opposition so far.
Priest Scandal: Catholic Church officials have released the names of 286 Texas priests who are believed to have molested children through the years. Thirteen served in the Diocese of Beaumont, and three were priests at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Liberty. The nature of the allegations and the locations where the priests were serving at the time of abuse were not disclosed. The priests named who served in Liberty are August Pucar, Frank Paduch and James Engle. August Pucar died in January 2012, and James Engle passed away in 1999. Frank Paduch was dismissed from the clerical state in 2006.
Bridgehaven Radio Auction: The annual Bridgehaven Children’s Advocacy Center’s radio auction is this Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. and then again on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Bridgehaven is the non-profit organization that serves the needs of child abuse victims in both Liberty and Chambers counties. Bridgehaven staff and volunteers will be on the air at KSHN FM 99.9 describing in detail items donated to the radio auction by generous businesses and professionals. Then, listeners call in with their bids. All money raised goes directly to Bridgehaven. Organizers say they have received some great auction items already but are still accepting more. For information or to donate to the radio auction, call Bridgehaven at 936-258-0400.
