DVFD ISO Rating: The Dayton Volunteer Fire Department has received a high rating by the Insurance Service Office or ISO on their fire suppression ability. Dayton City Manager Theo Melancon said his office was notified Monday that the DVFD ISO Rating had gone from a 6 up to a 2. That rating system from 10 to 1 - with 1 being the best and 10 the worst – has a direct impact on the cost of fire insurance premiums in the area that the fire department serves. We reported in July 2018 that Dayton City Council approved spending around $90,000 in bond funds for fire equipment with an eye toward improving the insurance rating for the Dayton Volunteer Fire Department’s service area. That equipment includes more air pack breathing gear as well as different types of ladders and firefighting picks and grapples. Add to that the purchase last year of a good, used ladder truck.
Men’s Health Fair: The Liberty-Dayton Regional Medical Center is hosting the free annual Men’s Health Fair on Saturday, January 26, from 8 a.m. to noon. The event began several years ago with a prostrate screening clinic co-sponsored by the hospital and KSHN Radio. In recent years, more free services have been added to give men more potentially life-saving information about their health. In addition to the DRE and PSA blood test for prostate screening, the Men’s Health Fair will provide a number of other blood and blood pressure tests, all free of charge. No pre-registration is necessary, but for more info, call the hospital at 936-336-7316, ext 124. The Liberty Dayton Regional Medical Center is at 1353 N. Travis in Liberty.
Rice Symposium: The 2019 Southeast Texas Rice Symposium is set for Thursday, January 24, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Winnie-Stowell Community Building. Participants will receive 3 pesticide continuing education credit hours. Those planning to attend this free event are asked to RSVP to the Jefferson County AgriLife Extension Office by Thursday, January 17. That phone number is 409-835-8461. For information, you can also call the Liberty County office at 936-334-3230.
