Economic Development Summit: The next Liberty County Economic Development Summit is this Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in the Cleveland Civic Center, 210 Peach Avenue. Liberty County Judge Jay Knight said the effort in recent years has been to bring all county economic development entities and the governments that oversee them together to address residential and commercial growth from a regional perspective. Judge Knight said the cities of Liberty, Dayton and Cleveland as well as Liberty County Commissioners Court and any other county government entity interested are all invited to the free meeting. The public is also encouraged to attend Thursday’s summit.

Former Deputy Arrested: A theft investigation has led to the arrest of 33-year-old Ricardo Aguilar Jr. He’s a former Liberty County sheriff’s deputy who also worked as a law enforcement officer for Liberty County Constable Precinct 6. Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader said his office received a complaint that Aguilar was working for an independent contractor who was doing repairs to a flood-damaged home. Sheriff Rader said the subsequent investigation showed that - unknown to the contractor - Aguilar had personally gone to the homeowner and received $4,000 to pay for supplies and repairs. Ricardo Aguilar Jr was arrested without incident last week and taken to Liberty County Jail. He has since been released on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond.
