City Sewer: It was late last year when Liberty City Council hired two engineering firms for the design phase of the water/sewer upgrades, one for each part of the project. The money for that work came from the Texas Water Development Board in the form of a low-interest loan. The estimated total cost of the planned improvements to Liberty’s water system is $11 million plus another $5 or $6 million for the sewer system work. City Manager Gary Broz said he expects the sewer upgrade portion of the work to be opened for construction bids in July.
Unmasking: A new term has come to the political forefront called unmasking. U.S. Rep. Brian Babin is expressing concern about those who may be illegally using unmasking for political purposes. When the United States intelligence agencies spy on terrorists or foreign organizations and countries, they often obtain surveillance between one of those entities and a U.S. citizen. That incidental collection is not considered illegal, and the government has agents who sift through the data to protect the identity of Americans. The identity of U.S. citizens is generally redacted in intelligence reports that go to the different agencies. With few exceptions, those names are to be protected. Recently, there have been accusations that unidentified members of the government or intelligence community have illegally unmasked names for political gain. Congressman Babin said he has asked the U.S. Attorney General’s Office to investigate.
