West Nile: A third human case of West Nile Virus has been reported in Liberty County. According to Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Branch, all three confirmed West Nile cases have been detected in the 77575 zip code, that’s the Liberty area. Texas Department of Health Services reports human West Nile symptoms can include headache, fever, muscle and joint aches, nausea and fatigue. In most cases, those with the virus will recover on their own. The more serious form of the virus causes neck stiffness, disorientation, tremors, muscle weakness, convulsions and even paralysis. Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Branch said help protect yourself by using insect repellent with DEET, drain standing water, wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk and keep screens on doors and windows. Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said they are keeping a close eye on the situation, but no spraying is planned so far.


Early Voting: While early voting does not start until October 20th, there will be some important changes. Liberty County Clerk Paulette Williams, said in addition to early voting locations in Liberty, Dayton, Hardin and Cleveland, there will be extra opportunities to vote early in the Dayton Independent School District. Also, the last day to register to vote in order to cast a ballot in the November General Election is October 6th.


Detwiler Tournament: The Fourth Annual Shane Detwiler Foundation Golf Tournament is Thursday at Eagle Pointe Golf Course in Mont Belvieu. It begins at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start. The foundation raises money to provide scholarships to individuals pursuing a degree in criminal justice at Sam Houston State University. Drive One: BJ Ford is hosting a “Ford Drive One for Your School” this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Dayton High School. Robert Dunn, Co-owner of BJ Ford, said Ford Motor Company will donate up to $6,000 based on the number of people who test drive a new Ford.
