Commissioners: During their regular meeting held yesterday morning, Liberty County Commissioners approved the proposed fiscal year 2015 budget with only a couple of changes. The Liberty County Sheriff's Department budget, which has been a bone of contention for weeks, remains set as was. Commissioners did approve two changes to the proposed county budget. One was to set the jail budget at $4.8 million, up from the originally proposed $4.5 million. Commissioners also approved withdrawing $360,000 from the Right of Way acquisition fund to split evenly between their four commissioners' precincts for the upcoming budget year.


Tidwell a Finalist: Liberty Police Chief Billy Tidwell is one of several finalists for the top post at the Tomball Police Department. Tidwell had nothing but praise for the City of Liberty, but said the position as police chief in Tomball is an opportunity for professional growth. City of Tomball officials are expected to make a decision by month's end. If Billy Tidwell is offered and accepts that position, he would likely start near the end of October.


Gatorfest: Texas Gatorfest is this Friday through Sunday at Fort Anahuac Park.Gates open Friday at 6 p.m. Festivities start Saturday morning at 10 with the amazing Texas Alligator Roundup. The 2014 Texas Gatorfest concludes Sunday with gates opening at noon. New Department Heads: The City of Liberty has added some new faces to the supervisory staff. City Manager Gary Broz said that includes a new city building department official and a new head of the city electric department. Donnelle Rogers is the new head of the Building Permits and Code Enforcement Department, replacing Roy Gilliland who retired. New Electrical Department Supervisor Roy Trotter has been at work for about two weeks and replaces the retired Randy Wiggins.


Obituaries: Louis Edward Thames, 88 of Anahuac. Service 10 a.m. tomorrow at First Baptist Church in Anahuac.
