Back-to-School Safety: School districts across the area and the state begin classes this coming Monday. That means motorists will once again be sharing the road with school buses, children walking or riding bicycles, and even lots of new teen drivers taking their first car to school. With that in mind, Liberty County AgriLife Extension Agent Alexis Cordova is urging drivers to be vigilant and take extra precautions, especially in and around school zones. Ms. Cordova said drivers should put away their cell phones, obey school zone and speed limit signs, and keep an eye on kids gathered at bus stops. Remember, slower speed and extra attention may save a life.

DISD Bond Proposal: We have reported the Dayton ISD is asking district voters to pass a bond issue totaling more than $87 million on November 4th. According to DISD Assistant Superintendent of Business Services Tami Pierce, best estimate is that school district taxpayers would see a property tax increase of roughly 28 cents per $100 of taxable value, if the bond issue passes. That increase would not affect property owners age 65 and older whose property tax rate is frozen on their homestead. Dayton School Superintendent Dr. Jessica Johnson said money from the bond proposal would fund two new Dayton elementary schools as well as numerous other improvements to the district's aging facilities.

Football Scrimmages: Several local high school varsity football teams are scrimmaging today for the final time before this year's 10-game regular season kicks off next weekend. The Dayton Broncos are at home versus Milby for a 7 p.m. final pre-season match-up with the Buffaloes. As for Liberty, the Panthers are hosting the Hardin Hornets with varsity starting at 6:30 p.m. in Memorial Stadium. The Tarkington Longhorns travel to Huffman for a three-way scrimmage with Hargrave and Porter. That gets under way at 7 tonight. Turning to Barbers Hill, the Eagles host a three-way scrimmage with Hamshire-Fannett and Baytown Sterling today starting at 7 p.m. in Eagle Stadium. Hull-Daisetta, Cleveland, Anahuac and East Chambers all held their final scrimmages yesterday.

Obituaries: Jessie Robert Gaskins, Sr., 81 of Dayton. Service 3 p.m. Friday at Pace-Stancil Funeral Home in Dayton.
