LISD Public Hearing: The Liberty school board will hold a public hearing tomorrow evening on the proposed budget and tax rate for the coming fiscal year. The proposed tax rate for the 2014-15 budget is unchanged from the current budget at $1.1686 per $100 property valuation. Liberty school trustees are also slated to adopt that tax rate and budget as well as a new compensation plan. They are using recommendations from an analysis by the Texas Association of School Boards. The TASB model being used by LISD in the budget calls for a 5.97 percent overall increase in the teacher pay structure and a 4 percent increase for other staff. That meeting of the Liberty school board is tomorrow at 6 p.m. in the LISD administration building on Grand Avenue. As always, the public is invited.

Ram Gridiron Challenge: It's a great way to help out the Liberty Athletic Booster Club while test driving a new Ram truck. Liberty-Dayton Chrysler is sponsoring a Ram Gridiron Challenge Fundraiser this Friday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Liberty's Memorial Stadium. David Leonard said it's a no-obligation, no-pressure event with Dodge donating $20 per test drive, up to $5,000. Athletic Director Chad Taylor says money raised at Friday's event will benefit all of the Panthers' athletic programs.

5K Run and Walk: The Third Annual Liberty Fire Department 5K Run and Walk is this Saturday at 9 a.m. in Liberty Municipal Park. All proceeds will benefit Liberty volunteer firefighters with essential equipment and training. For more information, call Misty Dulaney at 936-336-3922.

Labor Day Patrols: Texas Highway Patrol troopers will be out in force on Texas roadways through September 1 as part of their yearly Labor Day enforcement period. Troopers will be looking for impaired drivers during the state's annual Labor Day "Drink, Drive, Go to Jail" campaign. Last year, alcohol-related fatalities accounted for 1 in 3 of all Texas roadway deaths. The message from state troopers - never drink and drive.

Obituaries: Frank Jurecka Jr., 84, of Raywood. Service 10 a.m. today in Sacred Hearth Catholic Church. Alvin Ray Herndon Sr., 58, of Dayton. Service is 3 p.m. today at Pace-Stancil - Dayton.
