Hurricane Season: As the height of the hurricane season draws nearer, experts are urging residents not to be lulled into a false sense of security by the lack of tropical storm activity in the Gulf of Mexico. The historical peek of the hurricane season is from mid-August to late October. Liberty County Emergency Coordinator Tom Branch said now is the time to prepare for the likelihood of a storm. For helpful info on what you need in an emergency kit, as well as survival tips, go online to Once there, click on disaster preparedness under the local information tab. Mr. Branch also urges those who would need assistance or transportation during an evacuation to register with the state by calling 2-1-1.

Open Carry March: A Liberty County Open Carry Texas Chapter has scheduled an open carry walk for this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Liberty. Organizers say about 60 people are expected to walk from Brookshire Brothers on North Main to the courthouse and then back. They reportedly will be carrying firearms that are legal to openly carry in Texas, including rifles, shotguns and black-powder pistols. Liberty Police Chief Billy Tidwell said the law does allow some specific firearms to be carried openly, but pointing any weapon at another person is a violation of the law.

State Appointment: State Rep. John Otto of Dayton has been appointed by House Speaker Joe Straus to another important committee. The Dayton Republican has been assigned to the Legislative Budget Board. That board develops budget recommendations for the appropriations process. Rep. Otto said serving on that board, as well as the House Ways and Means and Appropriations committees, puts him in the middle of the state budgeting process from beginning to end.

Purse Bingo: Bridgehaven Children's Advocacy Center's big Purse Bingo fundraiser is this Saturday. Doors open at 1 p.m. at the new Liberty County community center - named the Jack Hartel Building - on San Jacinto in Liberty. This event is aimed at ladies, and it combines bingo and designer purses to raise money for Bridgehaven. Admission is $30 pre-sale or $35 at the door. Raffle tickets for a Louis Vuitton handbag are also available. For tickets or more info, call 258-0400.
