Fire: A Raywood area home and all its contents were lost in a fire early Thursday morning. Liberty firefighters were first to arrive. Liberty Assistant Fire Chief Bryan Hurst said the home belonging to Mike Mouton was engulfed in flames when they arrived. Liberty, Hull-Daisetta, and Hardin Firefighters spent 3 hours battling the fire. With that kind of head start, only the outside brick walls of the home was left standing. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Liberty County Fire Marshall Jim Wilson. None of the 4 residents were hurt.

Unemployment: The local jobless rate ticked slightly higher in May; however, the employment picture for Liberty County has improved from a year ago. According to the Texas Workforce Commission, unemployment for May here in Liberty County is 6.3 %, up slightly from April. In May 2013, the local unemployment rate was 8.0 %. In May 2012 the figure was higher still at 9.3%. The latest employment figures show there's now 30,887 Liberty County residents who have a job. That's an additional 1,832 workers from two years ago.

Boating Safety: Today through Sunday, Texas game wardens are joining law enforcement officers from across the US for Operation Dry Water. That's the nationwide boating while intoxicated awareness and enforcement campaign. According to Texas Parks and Wildlife officials, alcohol use is the leading known contributing factor in recreational boating deaths. Game wardens are reminding Texans to always have a designated driver while boating. Other safety tips include wearing a life jacket, use of an ignition safety switch, learn to swim, and take a boater education course. State officials say following those tips, while on the water, along with boating sober, could save your life.
