Retired Teacher Killed: A Smith Point retired teacher died in a vehicle crash Monday. Chambers County Sheriff Brian C. Hawthorne said Monday morning, his department responded to an automobile crash at Belton Lane and FM 563 in Anahuac. According to the sheriffs department, a vehicle, driven by retired school teacher, Joann Brenek of Smith Point, drove onto FM 563 from Belton Lane where she was struck by a pickup truck. That was driven by a 61 year old man, Minh Huynh. An unidentified woman was in that truck with Mr. Huynh. She was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital where she remains in critical condition. The driver of the other vehicle, Joann Brenek of Smith Point, also airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital. She was pronounced dead on arrival. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating.

Boating Safety: In the last two weeks, at least 12 people, including one local teenager, have lost their lives on Texas waters. Officials say that's an unusually high number of fatalities before the traditionally busy Memorial Day weekend. Game wardens are reminding Texans to use caution when on the water. State law requires a personal floatation device be available for each occupant of a boat. Children under 13 must wear a flotation device while the boat or paddle craft is underway or drifting. State officials remind Texans that game wardens will be patrolling the state's waterways over this holiday weekend. Anyone found operating a boat while intoxicated will face possible arrest and jail time.
