Timber Thefts: Over the past four months, more than 20 timber theft cases have been reported in East Texas. Authorities say many timber theft cases in this area involve absentee landowners who are susceptible because they are absentee owners and aren’t around to keep an eye on their property. In these cases, the thief is often long gone when the crime is discovered. Be sure to mark all property lines to assure cutting on adjacent property does not encroach on yours. Officials say if you find unauthorized cutting of timber on your land, immediately report it to local law enforcement.

Liberty RoadExpansion: Liberty City Manager Gary Broz said the Liberty City Council and Liberty Economic Development Corporation will meet in joint session next week to discuss the sale of $3.9 million in sales tax bonds.  That money will fund the roadway project to open some 300 acres of land to development between the Highway 146 bypass and Lakeland Drive.  According to the city manager, bids for construction of the project are due by February 27th, with hopefully bulldozers moving in April.

Go Texan: The Liberty County Houston Metro Go Texan Committee’s Annual Fundraising Kick-Off Dance is this Saturday at 8 p.m. in the TVE Expo hall. This year's featured performer is Jake Hooker and the Outsiders. All proceeds from the event benefit the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholarship fund. Advance, $15 tickets area available at PESCO in Liberty and at Dayton Farm and Ranch Supply in Dayton. Tickets will be $20 at the gate.  For more info, call Lori Zumpano at (713) 515 6104.

Social Security: Kim Richard with the Beaumont office of Social Security, said its not uncommon for people to confuse social security and supplemental security income, or SSI. She said while the programs are similar, there is significant differences. While social security offers medical benefits through Medicare, SSI medical benefits are administered by the state operated Medicaid program. To learn more, call 866-613-2864 in Beaumont or the nationwide number, 800-772-1213.
