Chambers County Murder: A Houston man is charged with murder following the shooting death of an unarmed man in Hankamer in what authorities are calling a case of road rage. Chambers County Sheriff Brian Hawthorne said 56-year-old Dewayne Brinkley is being held in the Chambers County Jail on a $750,000 bond. Brinkley reportedly shot and killed 54-year-old Leslie Larrison after a dispute in the 500 block of Barrow Cemetery Road in Hankamer.  Sheriff Hawthorne said it appears the two men had no contact prior to Friday night’s shooting.

High Marks: A recent state audit gave the Liberty County Central Appraisal District highest possible marks. Liberty County Chief Appraiser Alan D. Conner said, in 2009, the Texas Legislature enacted legislation that requires the state comptroller to audit county appraisal districts bi-annually. The Liberty County Appraisal District scored a perfect 100 in all categories.

Liquor Vote in Dayton: Dayton city officials say enough valid signatures have been obtained on a petition to place a liquor-by-the-drink and packaged-liquor referendum before Dayton voters. We’ve reported an economic development group in Dayton wants to give voters a chance to lift restrictions on the sale of alcoholic beverages in that city. Once Dayton City Council gives their approval, the proposition to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages by state-licensed businesses in Dayton will go before voters during the next city council election this coming May.

Social Security: There is a change coming to Social Security services. Starting later this year, you will no longer be able to obtain a benefit award letter at the district Social Security offices. Those who need proof of their monthly benefit amounts will only be able to get it by calling the Social Security nationwide toll-free number 1-800-772-1213 or by setting up a “My Social Security” account online at socialsecurity.gov.
