Special Needs Registration: Liberty County Emergency Management Coordinator Tom Branch said there’s a new program going into effect for residents to register special needs in the case of an emergency that requires evacuation.  Called S.T.E.A.R., or State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry, this new program is expected to be in place and working by April, ahead of the 2014 hurricane season. Tom Branch said the state is planning on purging all names from the current list and will require folks in need of special help to reregister each year. He said there are just a lot of changes every year in names, addresses, phone numbers and special needs. So the decision was made to start over each year on those lists.

Exploding Targets: The Liberty County Sheriffs Dept. has received complaints of what is called “exploding targets” in the Kenefick area. These one pound containers of mixed chemicals are detonated when a rifle shot is fired into them. The sheriffs department reports, while there are no laws that prevent the use of these “targets” in the rural areas of the county, it would appear that any misuse or abuse of the intended purpose could very well result in injury or worse for anyone nearby. Liberty County Sheriff Bobby Rader is advising extreme caution be exercised by anyone using these “exploding targets” or anyone near to the gunshot or target area.
