Cold Weather Precautions: The National Weather Service is predicting more prolonged sub-freezing temperatures overnight. Those experts project a low around 20 degrees overnight with freezing temperatures into the morning hours. Preparation and caution is advised. As for exposed plumbing, local experts say there are many types of insulation and warming tape available to protect pipes from freezing. Also, letting a faucet drip during very cold weather can help prevent pipes from bursting. For pets and livestock, Dayton veterinarian Dr. Luke Chachere said it takes a lot of energy to stay warm in low temperatures and extra food helps. Give outside animals a place to get out of the wind and any rain that may occur, and check water supplies, as they are likely to freeze overnight. As for outdoor plants, Master Gardner Al Brandli suggests watering the plant and then wrapping it in a sheet and then plastic. Area firefighters remind residents to use extra caution when using space heaters to keep warm. Make sure space heaters do not come in contact with any flammable materials. Another reminder – check on your neighbors, especially senior citizens who may live alone. Take time to remind them of what may be a dangerous freeze.
