Party Primary Election: Today is the last day for candidates to file to run in the March 4, 2014 party primary elections. Over the weekend, Todd Fontenot signed up to run for county judge, and A.C. Penton filed for JP Pct. 6 in the Cleveland area, both in the Republican Primary. For information on filing to run for office as a Republican, call Liberty County Republican Party Chairman Ken Coleman at 713-304-7406 or Republican Secretary Lee Haidusek Chambers at 512-965-1876. Democrat candidates can call Liberty County Democrat Party Chair Nancy Archer at 936-336-6330. Again, that filing period ends today at 6 p.m.

Power Outage: There have been several announcements on the upcoming planned power outage for the entire City of Liberty this Saturday starting at 11 p.m. and running for seven hours. Those with special requirements for things like medically necessary electrical appliances should contact the City of Liberty as soon as possible. Liberty Public Works Director Tom Warner said if you have a generator and plan to ride out the power outage at home, don’t plug that generator into a house outlet. If there’s a problem, you could damage your entire electrical system, or someone could be injured or worse. Instead, plug your needed appliances directly into the generator itself.

Energy Saving Tips: We’ve reported energy saving measures used in Dayton ISD facilities for the past year have resulted in significant savings for the local school district. Frosty Pruitt is serving as the district’s energy education specialist. He said many of the steps taken by DISD to save electricity costs also work at home. Mr. Pruitt said that includes turning off unneeded lights, unplugging appliances that won’t be used for a while and switching to energy efficient light bulbs.

Santa in Hardin: Everybody is invited to bring kids and a camera for a visit with Santa this Wednesday from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at Los Compadres Restaurant in Hardin. It’s sponsored by the Hardin Lions and Leo clubs and made possible by Los Compadres. Santa will be passing out free toys to kids 12 and under while supplies last. For information, call 936-298-1533.
