LibertyCityCouncil: In a historic action, the Liberty City Council voted Tuesday night to revoke permission to allow railroad access in the city limits. City Attorney Randy Gunter said Liberty is one of very few Texas cities that own the right-of-ways at railroad crossings. Mr. Gunter said Union Pacific Rail officials dispute the city’s claim, saying state law gives UP easements to use the crossings. In reality, the city has no way of enforcing the ordinance, but Mayor Carl Pickett said council hopes this will get the attention of railroad officials who have ignored the city’s attempts to negotiate for the abandoned rail spur crossing Hwy. 90.

Early Voting LISD: Early voting is under way in the Liberty school district’s Tax Ratification Election. Liberty school trustees are asking voters to approve a small increase to the district’s maintenance and operation tax rate. Trustees have already dropped the tax rate for debt service. Registered voters can vote Mon-Fri from 8 - 5 in Liberty City Council Chambers through October 8.
