Electronics at DISD: It was not so long ago that students’ personal smart phones and other computerized devices were not welcome at school. In many school districts, they still aren’t, but the Dayton ISD is beginning its second full year of BYOD or Bring Your Own Device under district guidelines. Amy Ripkowski is the instructional technology coordinator for DISD. She said incorporating those student-owned electronic devices into the classroom was a success last year. Ms. Ripkowski said it allows students to work with familiar technology to enhance the learning process.

Medicare Part B: Kim Richard of the Beaumont Social Security office said some Medicare beneficiaries will be receiving notice by mail that they may be eligible for lower Medicare Part B premiums through a subsidy program. The letter will ask you to call 1-800-medicare. Ms. Richard said that is the correct toll-free number for Medicare information.

Master Gardeners: The Liberty County Master Gardener Association’s next monthly meeting will feature Tom Leroy, who will be discussing fall vegetable gardening. That informative program is Thursday, September 12, from 6 to 9 p.m. Since a large turnout is expected, it will be held at the Liberty Church of Christ on North Main Street in Liberty. Cost is $10, which covers the expense of a big packet of instructional materials. Those planning to attend are asked to pre-register by calling the Liberty County Extension office at 936-334-3230.

CASAClay Shoot: CASA of Liberty and Chambers Counties is holding a sporting clays fundraiser a week from Saturday, September 7, at Clay Mound Shooting Center between Liberty and Dayton. Entry is $100. They are also looking for sponsors. CASA provides trained, court-appointed volunteers to serve as advocates for the best interests of abused and neglected children in the foster care and court systems for both Liberty and Chambers counties. To be a sponsor, call Glen Croft at 832-401-5762. For information, go to
