Police Chief Search: Dayton City Council will meet tonight to take the next step in finding a new police chief. Dayton City Manager David Douglas said council members will consider giving their approval to five finalists to replace longtime Dayton Police Chief Pete Douzat, who is retiring in September. The city manager said those candidates approved tonight will be interviewed by council members for this position during the next couple of weeks. David Douglas said he expects council to approve hiring a new Dayton police chief in 30 days or less.

Property Values: The Liberty County Central Appraisal District has released its 2013 Certified Taxable Property Values. According to Chief Appraiser Alan D. Conner, the total taxable value for properties countywide is $4.385 billion. That is down 2.77 percent or off $124.8 million from last year. Conner said there were 2,173 protests filed this year. Most were resolved by staff, but 227 ended up before the Appraisal Review Board.

Feral Hog Program: The Liberty County Extension Service will host a program on feral hog control this Thursday. Mark Tyson, a wildlife and fisheries extension associate, will speak on feral hog habits, environment and control. It begins Thursday at 9 a.m. in the extension office, 501 Palmer Avenue in Liberty - that’s just off Navigation at the water tower. The informative program will be followed by a trap demonstration and a site visit to a Liberty neighborhood being overrun with feral hogs. For information, call the extension office at 936-334-3230.

LMS Orientation: Liberty Middle School will hold orientation this week for students and their parents. Orientation for incoming sixth-graders is tomorrow from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. with parents invited starting at 6. Then, LMS seventh-graders and their parents gather on Thursday this week from 5 to 6 p.m. followed by eighth-grade students and their parents Thursday from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. For more information, call Liberty Middle School at 936-336-3582.
