Fatality Update: The Department of Public Safety reports the two women killed in a Thursday afternoon crash near Cleveland were both from Lufkin. Justice of the Peace Precinct #5 Wade Brown pronounced dead, the driver Tana Roy and a passenger Helen Stopak, 79. Another passenger, Jenny Young, 52 of Louisiana was taken to Conroe Regional Hospital with only minor injuries. Investigators say Ms. Young was the only one of the three women wearing a seatbelt.

Norman Will Run: Precinct #4 Liberty County Commissioner Norman Brown has announced he will run for a new 4 year term in 2014. Commissioner Brown said he intends to serve as long as he is re-elected by constituents and as long as he is physically and mentally able to do so. Presently he is in his third term.

Sales Tax Holiday: A reminder: the very popular back-to-school sales tax holiday is this weekend. Friday August 9 through Sunday August 11th. You can find a complete list of tax free items at the State Comptrollers web site. Link there through the government tab at kshn.com

Hunting on the Refuge: The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge will begin taking applications for hunting permits August 19th. Refuge Manager Stuart Marcus said the archery hunt is lottery, while upland game and muzzleloader hunt permits will be issued on a 1stcome basis. In addition, the refuge does not take cash or credit cards with those applications, only checks or money orders. Each individual hunt application requires a $15 application fee.
