DaytonSchoolBoard: DaytonSchoolTrustees met Tuesday night and heard a report from Stephen F. Austin Elementary Principal Nellie Tinkle on the district’s ongoing plane to phase out the usual letter grade evaluation for some grades. DISD Superintendent Mike Kuhrt said the switch to what is called a “standards based” report card that started last year, provides a better assessment of the student’s progress. In other action, trustees approved the hiring of a number of new teachers as well as a new assistant principal for Richter Elementary, Jessica Ott. In all, 24 new staff members, most of them teachers and all of them new hires, joined Dayton ISD. They still have 22 openings.

McCoy’s Building: An important news release was provided by the Liberty Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce that McCoy’s Building Supply is expanding to Dayton. Word originated from the Dayton Community Development Corporation Executive Director Courtland Holman. A news release said construction will begin in the next few months at the intersection of State Hwy 146 and Brown Roadin Dayton. The new McCoy’s Building Supply store officials said they want to have their new store open in early 20-14.

Sales Tax Holiday: The second weekend in August is the popular annual back-to-school sales tax holiday. Texas Comptroller Susan Combs said the three-day period offers shoppers in Texasa chance to save money on certain back-to-school items priced under $100. The sales tax free holiday is August 9-11.

Water: Members of the Kenefick Volunteer Fire Department, like most volunteer fire fighters, are having a real shortage of drinking water for the huge job they do every day in the heat of southeast Texas. This Saturday from 9 a.m.until 2 p.m.Kenefick Volunteers will be on hand at their fire department. They are asking those who can help to bring bottled water, snack packs too, by their station on FM 1008 in Kenefick.
