Man Injured in Leap from Bridge: A Dayton man, Randy Chapman, 34, told police alcohol was an issue when he jumped off the old Trinity River Bridge on Hwy 90 in Liberty. Chapman and some friends had been drinking and decided to jump into the river. New Liberty Police Officer Walter investigated the incident which appears to be just a bad decision. Police say Randy Chapman was treated and released from Liberty Dayton Medical Center with a badly sprained ankle.


Arrest: Rebekah Dowdy, 44, was arrested Monday night by the Liberty County Sheriffs Department charged with ”Endangering and Abandoning a Child” a 2nddegree felony. Her arrest is in connection with the August 2012 death of her granddaughter 18-month-old Harlee Dowdy. The girl’s uncle, Jack Hollis was also charged in the child’s death when he is said to have dropped her.


West Nile: Officials with the Texas Department of State Health Services is urging special precautions to reduce the risk of contracting the mosquito borne West Nile Virus. Texasreported 1,868 human cases of West Nilein 2012, with 89 of those being fatal. So far only two cases have been recorded in Texasthis year, and neither was fatal. The Texas DHS advises use of insect repellent, drain standing water, wear long sleeves and pants at dawn and dusk, and keep screens on windows. Insect repellants that contain DEET are suggested for use. To find out more, visit the state’s website at

Panther Football Camp and Physicals: The Liberty Panther Football Summer Camp begins Monday July 29th. The camp is for incoming 7th– 9thgraders, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the high school field house. Head Football Coach Chad Taylor said campers will learn football drills and skills. He also said it’s a good time to remind Liberty Athletes who have not yet had their physicals to do so, since two a day football practice starts the following week.
