Missing County Funds: A 17-year employee of the Liberty County Attorney’s Office is under criminal investigation for theft. According to information from the Liberty County Sheriff’s Office, back on June 17, that unidentified employee was found in possession of receipts and cash from the County Attorney Office’s Pre-Trail Diversion Project. A subsequent audit by County Attorney Wes Hinch revealed several thousand dollars are missing. Shortly after the sheriff’s investigation began, the employee reportedly made incriminating statements to her co-workers. She has since resigned. For now, the case remains under investigation to determine the amount of the loss. Information from the investigation will be turned over to the Liberty County District Attorney’s Office to be reviewed by a grand jury for possible charges.

Tax Deadline: A reminder – today is the deadline for property owners to pay any remaining 2012 property taxes without incurring attorney collection costs. The official date was yesterday, June 30, but because that fell on a Sunday this year, taxpayers actually have through today to pay those taxes without attorney fees that can be up to 20 percent. For information, call the Liberty County tax office at 936-336-4633 or go to the county’s website. That can be accessed from www.kshn.com – just click on the ‘government’ tab under local information.
