Hit and Run Fatality: The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the death of a bicyclist on FM 1409 yesterday mid-morning. Liberty County Sheriffs Department Captain Ken DeFoor said initial information indicates a motorist noticed a heavily damaged bicycle lying on the side of FM 1409. When they went back to investigate they found a man lying in a roadside ditch. The victim of the hit and run was pronounced dead by JP #4 Barry Graves. It is unknown how long the man may have been in the ditch before being found. According to reliable information, a driver came forward and claimed responsibility Tuesday afternoon. Texas DPS Trooper Cody Davis is investigating.


Douzat Retiring: Long time Dayton Police Chief Pete Douzat has submitted his letter of retirement to the City of Dayton. Chief Douzat said he would retire September 6th, after more than 20 years with Dayton PD. That retirement is not official until the letter is accepted by city council.


Commissioners: Liberty County Commissioners yesterday, again awarded the contract for the ambulance service, in the unincorporated areas of the county, to Liberty County Emergency Medical Services. Liberty County Judge Craig McNair said Liberty County EMS had worked hard to reduce the costs to the county, cutting their bid by 15 %.


DARScholarship: The Libertad Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution have awarded Allison Meche of Liberty, a $5,000 Good Citizen scholarship. This scholarship is awarded annually to one of the six participants in the organization’s Good Citizen Competition. Those winners, one from each high school in the county, are selected by their peers to compose an essay, and then a committee selects the scholarship winner.


Father Event: All fathers and soon-to-be dads are invited to a very special free communitywide “Courageous Fathers” event this Friday and Saturday at the Dayton Community Center. On Friday, the movie “Courageous” will be shown at 6 p.m. followed by a father-daughter dance. Then Saturday, at 11 a.m. fathers will gather again to take an oath, pledging to be the kind of hands-one fathers their families and the community needs.
