Still a Tie: The outcome of yesterday’s recount of the May 11thLiberty school board election that saw a tie vote between incumbent June Jackson and challenger Jeffrey Smart remains a tie. Election Day, the two logged 196 votes each. Liberty ISD trustees will meet tonight at 6 for their regularly scheduled board meeting. Both candidates in the tie agree a second election is the best option. At this point, Saturday June 15, is the recommended date for a second election. If trustees approve that, early voting would likely take place Monday through Friday June 3-7 and again on Monday and Tuesday, June 10-11.


Energy Star: This Memorial Day Weekend, Texas shoppers will again get a break on state and local sales taxes on the purchase of qualifying Energy Star Appliances. That includes dishwashers, clothes washers, but not dryers, and refrigerators. Between 12:01 a.m. Saturday May 25thand 11:59 p.m. Monday May 27th, there will be no sales taxes on refrigerators priced under $2,000, air conditioners under $6,000, ceiling fans, incandescent and fluorescent light bulbs, dehumidifiers, and programmable thermostats.


Magnolia Ridge: The 60thAnnual Magnolia Ridge Golf Tournament this past weekend drew a full slate of competitors, and it was Michael Arneaud who topped the field in what’s called the Championship Flight at the end of three days of golf.


125 years: The Vindicator Newspaper is celebrating its 125thAnniversary. Publisher Carol Skews said the year-long commemoration celebrates the first edition published December 3, 1887.  It is the oldest continuously published newspaper in Liberty County. Most of the issues of The Vindicator are archived as the Sam Houston Center on FM 1011 for those researching the areas past history.


Memorial Day: The 34thAnnual Memorial Day Service at Palms Memorial Park south of Dayton is next Monday at 10 a.m. The public is invited to this service honoring those who died protecting America during times of war.
